Dude, you actually bought something from a GUY in a ROBE??!!! *LOL*
It was a setup, defianetly. Those gnomes were most assuredly his servents, and he didn't like your yard because it looked better than his, so he sold them to you, and than last night they completely trashed everything that you had worked so hard tp build. Sorry, Joe.
Either that or he's under another name here, and you said something to really piss him off.
References :
I hates gnomes.

Gnomes are a very tricky species.

There is a secret organization, begun in France (Garden Gnome Liberation Front). They believe in freeing the gnomes to live in the wild forests, where they are felt to belong. This group may have just paid you a visit, and returned your gnomes to the forest.

Either that, or Alphus stole them back to sell to someone else.

Or high school kids, or middle school kids.

Raccoons and crows have been known to covet shiny objects.
References :
http://archives.cnn.com/2000/STYLE/arts/04/12/france.gnomes.reut/

My cousin is always shouting at gnomes. She playes on the horde side in WOW. Maybe it was a dark elf of something like that.
References :
Any animal will tear up a garden...but the gnomes are gone? That sounds like one of those human critters......nothing I know eats plaster...and if they were eaten, you'd see the fragments and dust of them lying there.

Edit - Maybe you'll get lucky like that lady on the news....her gnome was stolen...and it appeared back on her lawn a few months later...with pictures of it around various landmarks in the US....he took a vacation!
