How do you keep your garden gnomes from coming to life and digging holes in your back yard while you sleep?
I have tried to drown them, but they won’t die.
Get a big light stationed up in the tree and when you go to bed flip the light on. It will confuse them and they’ll think its daylight. After a while they will get sick of being underground and burrow somewhere that doesnt have the light issues of the yard and you can quit having to turn the light on at night.

Never sleep, when in such a state, your guard is down and you are open to invasion from the enemy.
Drowning,as you have found, does not work on gnomes.
Sledge hammers are much more effective.

Nothing you can do. Give them to someone at least 20 miles NE of you, in a rural area, or to a queen who is collecting them.

Put them to work. If they want to dig holes, tell them where to dig and let them go to work. Ask if they can weed the garden while thay are at it.
