WORLD OF GNOMES NOW

What cartoons did you used to watch when you were very young?

I remember things like David the Gnome, Eureka’s Castle, the Smurfs, Garfield, and Chip and Dale’s Rescue Rangers. What sort of cartoons or shows did you watch as a kid?
I’m especially interested in the answers of the older crowd (being 22 myself).
Ah! And of course Looney Toons =D.

I remember the night of the Great Blackout of 1964 (I was eight or nine) I was watching Huckleberry Hound when the lights went off and I was so FURIOUS I cried because I was missing it. Pink panther, of course. And Popeye. Even then I preferred the older Fleischer studios stuff where Popeye has that skipper’s and black tunic. Looney Tunes, all kinds of Disney Shorts (I lost count of the number of places and times I saw Toot, Whistle, Plunk & Boom. I do remember several times expecting to be bored, then forgetting to be). Flintstones of COURSE. And Magilla Gorilla. I lasted through Speed Racer, Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion (I lasted beyond that but I wasn’t young any more. I just also want to say something about something that wasn’t animation — or live action. Supermarionetron was this british crew — Gerry and Sylvia Anderson who were later responsible for Space 1999. They did Supercar when I was very little, Stingray, Thunderball and the Thunderbirds which was made into a lousy live action movie a few years back. Supercar was like 58 or 59, so I was barely out of diapers and I just LOVED those cheesy puppets so much I followed their series through the seventies.

I watched all of the above. Two of my favorites, however, were Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (what young boy DIDN’T watch that show?) and The Real Ghostbusters, the interest in the latter carrying over to present day. I just rediscovered some episodes and found they are as enjoyable today as they were then! It’s a true shame that they can’t be found in season box sets.

The earliest ones that I remember were Popeye, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, Heckle and Jeckle, Top Cat, Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Bugs Bunny,Felix the Cat, and re-runs of Looney Toons from the 40s. I was born in 1955, and saw a lot of them in theaters – 15 cents for a newsreel, a cartoon, and the feature (double feature if you were lucky!) :-)

I also remember CLEARLY the first time the Charlie Brown Christmas special was on TV in 1965 – I was 10, and it was on a black-and-white TV :-)

My sophomore research paper for English in college was on Walt Disney’s "Fantasia," and I have an early drawing of Donald Duck signed by one of the Disney animators.

Very young as in under 5? Thomas the Tank Engine (not a cartoon, but still something I never missed), Muppet Babies (don’t ask), Care Bears, and Maya the Bee are the only ones I can remember. Of course, I also watched every Disney movie I could get my hands on.
